The Stone Town buildings were mainly made of coral stone and mangrove wood, placed in thick mortar, and then plastered and whitewashed, the Swahili architecture of Stone Town incorporates elements and traditions of Arabic, Persian, Indian, European and African styles. ZANZIBAR PRISON ISLANDThe world is surrounded by different types of prison islands, such as Alcatraz Island in the USA California, Robben Island in South Africa, and Devil’s Island in French Guiana. Zanzibar has one such island built as a prison by the British in 1893. On this tour, you will learn the real history of this prison and see its ruins. You will be surprised by the beauty of the island that has a beautiful beach with soft sand and clean water from the Indian Ocean. This island is currently home to large tortoises weighing up to 250 to 300 kg, and they can live up to 300 years. There are also more than 100 peacocks and some duikers. You can spend some time on the beach, snorkel, or swim before you get back on the dhow to finish your tour. When you walk on the beach, sometimes you can get lucky and see some sea creatures, such as starfish, seahorses, crabs, sea urchins and more.
